Health and Wellness Retreats: Changing How We Travel in 2020 Due to COVID


2020 has been a year of uncertainty, and for many of us, there is a greater need than ever to tend to our well-being - physically, mentally, and spiritually. Yet as stress and restrictions abound, we find that many of our previous go-to methods and places may not be available to us during this time. Much of the travel industry is on pause, and many international destinations are a no-go for Americans seeking a wellness getaway.

Although we may long for the days of jumping on a plane or cruise ship to head somewhere exotic for a wellness retreat or adventure, now we are faced with a unique opportunity for growth and discovery closer to home. As we navigate this uncharted territory, silver linings serve as guideposts on the path to our desired happiness, connection, healing, and experiences. For if nothing else, this situation has forced us to be creative, to dig deeper, to approach life with fresh eyes and spirit.

What does this mean for how we travel, explore, and seek health and wellness experiences?

It means we stay regional; we revisit the old with new intent, we get outdoors more, and we open ourselves up to the wonders of the world already around us!

We have spent the past 6 weeks rediscovering “The Real Florida” with mini-retreats. The Florida that does not involve fast passes and gridlock traffic, waiting in line for 60-second thrill rides and hotdogs. The best parts of Central Florida including hiking, biking, piling into AirBNB houses with other adventurers and witnessing the wonders of nature. Have you ever seen a bear yearling climb a tree for a snack of berries and leaves? That happened at our Alexander Springs Paddleboard Adventure.


From the very beginning, the vision of Om Sunshine Yoga & SUP was yoga in nature and being mobile. There is something extraordinary and meditative about being outside and observing native animals, birds, trees, and waterways. And unbelievably; caves!! Yes, caves in the middle of a forest!


So, with that, let’s all embrace the gift that the pandemic has offered. A chance to change perspective. A chance to be still….

Relaxation.        Connection.

Peace.                Vitality.

Adventure.        Beauty.

Laughter.           Awareness.

Gratitude.          Meditation.

Joy.                      Nature.

You do not need to travel very far to pull back from the stress of everyday life and enjoy enriching experiences. On the contrary, whether a few hours or a few days, local or regional, there is an adventure awaiting you.
